Polish poet wins the European Literary prize

The European Literary Prize for Literature this year was won by Polish poet and playwright Tadeusz Rózewicz (b. 1921). This annual prize is awarded by the European Commission to an author who has made a significant contribution to contemporary European literature. Tadeusz Rózewicz received the prize at a special ceremony in Strasburg this Sunday for his overall output.

Previous laureates of the European Literary prize include Spanish poet Antonio Gamoneda (2006) and Finish poet Bo Carpelan (2007). Różewicz is generally regarded as one of Poland's best present-day poets and most innovative playwrights. His works have been translated into Danish, Finnish, French, German, English, , Serbian, Serbo-Croatian and Swedish.
Tadeusz Różewicz is also one of five nominees for the highly prestigious US National Book Critics Circle award. The results are to be announced this Thursday.
