Poland on the EU market
Poland is the sixth largest country in the European Union and holds the eighth place in the EU in terms of foreign trade turnover - Deputy Minister of the Economy Marcin Korolec writes for Polish Market in a statement about Poland’s place on European Union markets.
78% of Poland’s exports go to European Union countries and 64% of imports come from the EU. Poland has a positive trade balance with the EU of nearly EUR 4 billion. That is a reflection of the good competitive position of Polish products on EU markets.
Dominant in Polish exports to the EU (nearly 25%) are highly advanced technical products of the automobile industry, TV sets and equipment, car engines and vehicles. Poland is also a leading European exporter of buses and refrigerators. Promising fields in Poland’s relations with EU countries cover renewable energy, industrial and residential housing construction as well as widely perceived collaboration in the development of infrastructure and environment protection.
Poland’s position in the EU is highlighted by the agreement reached on the EU climate and energy package. Poland has been very actively involved on this issue. The package creates realistic chances for improving the energy infrastructure of Poland and the EU. The package was recently supplemented by the European Council’s decision to earmark EUR 5 billion for energy investments within the framework of the European anti-crisis programme. These investments include the construction of CO2 capture installations in the Bełchatów power station and the liquid natural gas terminal in Swinoujscie.
We are interested in promoting close cooperation with EU member countries in the fields of energy security and diversification of energy supply sources. Poland supports the idea of developing a European energy policy, including the intensification of energy cooperation with countries in Eastern Europe and Southern Caucasus. That would help to stabilize the terms of collaboration with energy raw material producers and transit countries.
Following the initiative of Poland and Sweden, the European Union adopted the draft of Eastern Partnership. This is to facilitate the conclusion of cooperation agreements, the introduction of visa-free traffic and the establishment of a free trade area covering services and agricultural products.
